Claud Butler bikes are currently a bike brand produced and owned by the British Bicycle maker Falcon. Claud Butler was a very popular pro cyclist who after finishing with cycling in the early 1920’s started out producing Road Bike Frames in his shed in South London. The was a boom in cycling between the wars and because of Claud Butlers natural entrepreneurial powers and an increase in demand Claud Butler was able to pen his first Bike shop in Battersea London followed in quick success by a string of Claud Butler Cycle shops through London and eventually nationwide.
Claud Butler bikes quickly gained a reputation for innovation such as a brand new bronze welded frame construction making the Butler frames strong and stiff by 1931 Claud Butler Cycles were being used in the cycling world championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. And following Cycle World Championships of 1932 Italy and 1933 France and 1934 Germany. They were also ridden in the 1932 Los Angeles, USA Olympics and by internationally renowned cyclists on the pro continental road racing circuit. By the 1950’s the Claud Butler Cycle Company was in decline caused in part by a shorter working week and the Holdsworth Cycle Company bought out Claud Butler Cycles. The Claud Butler Bike Frames continued to sell well and gained even more credibility amongst the cycling world. By the Late 1970’s the Holdsworth Cycle Companyhad acquired the Falcon cycle brand. And over time Falcon have become the senior partner. The Claud Butler badge is reserved for their Top End Bicycle Models and Claud Butler produce a good range of Road Bikes from entry level to top notch.

Road Bicycles (racing cycles) are typically designed to be ridden on tarmac roads at high speed for this reason they are made from light weight materials such as carbon, titanium and aluminum to reduce the effort required for a rider to cycle up hills or mountains. Most Road bikes have multiple gears with a cassette of sprockets at the back wheel and often with a two or three ring sprocket at the drive chain. multi gear bikes are far more flexible depending on the incline of the road being ridden. Road cycles are generally fitted with thin wheels and tyres to reduce drag from the road and allow faster riding. Drop down handle bars are preferred for aerodynamic advantages when descending or sprinting. Road Bicyles differ greatly in price with the top end models such as those used by professional cyclist in pro cycle events such as the Tour de France and Giro d' Italia running into thousands. Reasonable and entry level Road bikes can be found at much more affordable prices in many Bike stores and online.
