By Frank Bowden after having been told by a doctor that in order to get Fit he should take up cycling. Frank Bowden bought a Bicycle made by Woodhead, Angois and Ellis. Bowden was so impressed with his new found hobby of cycleing and the bike he had bought, that he decided ro pay the bike makers a visit.  The Woodhead, Angois and Ellis Cycle company were based in Raleigh Street, Nottingham, UK. And at the time of Frank Bowdens visit were building just three bikes a week. Bowden offered a sum and bought the company. Within three years of Bowden taking over the company sales and production had grown so much that a new address was required to allow for increased production. So bowden moved his cycle company to Russelll Street, Nottingham but changed the Name of his company to Raleigh Bicycles to comemorate the cycle makers original location. With six years Raleigh Bicycles were the largest Bicycle makers in not only the UK but world and occupied a site in Farady Road, Nottingham that covered 7 ½ acres.
By the late 1930s Raleigh had opened a bike factory in Hanover Quay, Dublin, Ireland this to expanded rapidly and continued to produce bicycles until its closure in 1976 due to fire damage.  Raleigh at this time were famed for such models as the iconic Raleigh Chopper.
 By the end of WWII aleigh had forged a growing reputation in the Road Bike or lightweight sport roadster bikes market. By the mid 1940s Raleigh  together with other british cycle makers accounted for 94% of all bicycles imported into the USA.
Raleigh’s English Racer bikes and sports roadsters were popular all around the world.
In 1957 Raleigh bought the BSA Bicycle Cocmpany which already owned the Triumph cycle company these were amalgamated into the Raleigh Bicycle Company.
By the early Sixties Raleigh had also acquired the Triumph Cycle Company who at the time were one of the largest makers of lightweight Bicycles in the UK. Raleigh also went on to buy up both Hercules Cycles and Phillips Cycles and Brooks Saddle Makers. All production wass switched to Nottingham. Raleigh have had a long history of being involded in cycle sports with their greatest success coming through the Ti-Raleigh pro cycle team of the late 1970s and 1980s the Raleigh Cycle team was co sponsored by Panasonic and in 1980 Dutch cyclist Joop Zoetemelk won the Tour De France riding a Ti Raleigh Cread Road Bike. Raleigh were also the supplier of Racing Bikes to the French Systeme U pro cycle team of the mid 1980s. Raleigh Race Road Bike Frames were made by the companys specialist products devision. Raleigh currently owns the Diamonback Bike brand and supported many British cycle teams thoughout the years such as the Raleigh Banana Proc Cycle Team of the mid 1990s. Rleigh have recntly anounced that they will by starting a new British cycle team named Team Raleigh.
Raleigh produce a a number of Road specific and Race cycle with the current top of the range models being the Raleigh Avanti TT Team Carbon Road Bike and Raleigh Avanti U6 Road Bike. As well as road bikekes made through Diamond back.

Road Bicycles (racing cycles) are typically designed to be ridden on tarmac roads at high speed for this reason they are made from light weight materials such as carbon, titanium and aluminum to reduce the effort required for a rider to cycle up hills or mountains.
