Schwinn Bicycles are a US Bike maker, founded in Chicago, USA, 1895 by Ignaz Schwinn, a German imigrant and Bicycle Maker from Hardheim and Financer Adolph Arnold a German American, Originally forming a Bicycle Company called Arnold, Schwinn & Company. Schwinn Bicycles through most of the twentieth century were the largest producer of bicycles in th USA Schwinn have been through a number of ups and downs through their long history as a bicycle maker. Throughout the years of the Great depression of the 1920s and 1930s, Schwinn continued to sell bicycles by switching design and production to a pratical and affordable range of bicycles. By the eraly 1950s Schwinn switched from rebranding to sell to department stores as was the custom for US cycle makers pre 1950s, and insisted that the Schwinn Brand and ascociated Schwinn gauarantee remain on all cycles sold to department stores in the US. This greatly increased the public awareness of the Schwinn Cycle brand and helped Schwinn to grow rapidly during the 1950s. By the end of the 1960s Schwinn were selling over a million bicycles a year and one of the largest cycle makers in the USA. The post war years for cycle slaes became flooded by European Inports from Great Britain and Germany where the art of making much lighter bike frames was well established. Schwinn combatted the lighter weight imports by introducing its new middle weight range of bikes a version of the English lightweight bike but with stronger more robust components. Schwinn unlike all other major Cycle makers concentrated exclusively on the supply and sponsorship of USA Cycle teams for racing in the US exclusively. This led in the long run to Schwinn being perceived to have fallen behind in the latest innovations and technologies. Schwinn eventually changed stratedgy to global cycle teams in line with all its major cycle making competitiors. In the 1950s, Schwinn began to aggressively cultivate bicycle retailers, persuading them to sell Schwinns as their predominant, if not exclusive brand. During this period, bicycle sales enjoyed relatively slow growth, with the bulk of sales going to youth models. In 1900, during the height of the first bicycle boom, annual U.S. sales by all bicycle manufacturers had briefly topped one million. By 1960, annual sales had reached just 4.4 million.[7] Nevertheless, Schwinn's share of the market was increasing, and would reach in excess of 1 million bicycles per year by the end of the decade.
In the 1960s Schwinn Bicycles had a huge success on their hands with the introduction of The Schwinn Stingray which was made to resemble a motorcycle complete with bannana seat and high rise handle bars and a cross bar made to resemble a fuel tank. It seemed like every kid in the states wanted one and the Stingray became an iconic childs bike of the era and beyond. By the 1970s Schwinn was building a range of 10 speed Schwinn Road bikes to compete with light weight european Road Bicycle imports. Schwinns standard Road Bike model from the 1970s was the Schwinn World Traveller and a top end touring bicycle the Schwinn Voyager a bothg bikes were lugged with butted Tange chromoly tubing, Shimano derailleurs, and SunTour bar-end shifters, at the time a major challenger to the Paramount series of similar bikes and at half the price.Schwinn have a good range of Road Bikes at an affordable price for more details on Schwinn Road Bicycles see below…

Road Bicycles (racing cycles) are typically designed to be ridden on tarmac roads at high speed for this reason they are made from light weight materials such as carbon, titanium and aluminum to reduce the effort required for a rider to cycle up hills or mountains. Most Road bikes have multiple gears with a cassette of sprockets at the back wheel and often with a two or three ring sprocket at the drive chain. multi gear bikes are far more flexible depending on the incline of the road being ridden. Road cycles are generally fitted with thin wheels and tyres to reduce drag from the road and allow faster riding. Drop down handle bars are preferred for aerodynamic advantages when descending or sprinting. Road Bicyles differ greatly in price with the top end models such as those used by professional cyclist in pro cycle events such as the Tour de France and Giro d' Italia running into thousands. Reasonable and entry level Road bikes can be found at much more affordable prices in many Bike stores and online.
